Rapid development of basal ganglia calcification.

چکیده
The pathologic and radiologic appearance of calcification of the corpus striatum is now well recognized. This calcifi cation can be assoc iated with endocrine , congenital / developmental, inflammatory , and anoxic/toxic conditions. Although the assoc iation of the basal ganglia calc ification with these cond itions is well establised, its pathogenesis is poorly understood . We found no specific answer in the literature as to how long it takes for the pathologic basal ganglia calcificat ion to occur. However, we got the impression that it takes at least several months to years. We recently encountered a young patient in whom the basal ganglia calci fication was demonstrated on sequential computed tomography (CT) scans after only 31 days.

An elderly woman with calcification of the basal ganglia who presented with shuffling gait : a review with a case report
Computed tomography (CT) scan of her brain revealed heavy calcification in the basal ganglia and dentate nuclei (FIGURES 1-3). There was also mild ventricular dilatation and cerebellar atrophy. Her full blood count was normal and B12 was marginally low at 150 pmol/L (normal range, 180-660 pmol/L). Biochemistry—including electrolytes, urea, creatinine, and calcium—was within normal limits, as we...
متن کاملThe significance of the incidental finding of basal ganglia calcification on computed tomography.
Basal ganglia calcification was found as an incidental finding in 42 out of 7000 patients who underwent computed tomography. The calcification showed on plain skull radiography when the maximum density on computed tomography exceeded 100 Hounsfield units. The 26 patients with basal ganglia calcification detected on computed tomography who were available for follow-up, were investigated with mat...
متن کاملCooccurrence of Multiple Sclerosis and Idiopathic Basal Ganglia Calcification
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease of central nervous system that affects both white and gray matter. Idiopathic calcification of the basal ganglia is a rare neurodegenerative disorder of unknown cause that is characterized by sporadic or familial brain calcification. Concurrence of multiple sclerosis (MS) and idiopathic basal ganglia c...
متن کاملBasal ganglia calcification in Down's syndrome.
The basal ganglia from 33 patients (all over one year of age) with Down's syndrome were examined pathologically. Forty-five per cent had calcification. Basal ganglia calcification was localised to a constant area of globus pallidus and became more prominent with increased age. Calcification and amyloid degeneration of the adjacent blood vessels were present. The proximity of abnormal blood vess...
متن کاملBasal ganglia calcification and psychosis in Down's syndrome.
A case of basal ganglia calcification (diagnosed in vivo) and schizophreniform psychosis occurring in a young adult with Down's syndrome is reported. A stress-vulnerability model is suggested. Because of the relatively high prevalence of basal ganglia calcification to Down's syndrome, this population appears well suited for systematic study of the neuropsychiatric aspects associated with this n...
